AFI Research Collection
The AFI Research Collection is a treasure trove and an integral part of AFI history. A specialist film and television industry resource, the Collection is open to the public free of charge, and here at AFI | AACTA, we’d like to remind our members of this invaluable library.
Established by the Australian Film Institute as a library in 1978, at which time it was located in Cardigan Street in Carlton, Melbourne, and later in Moray Street, South Melbourne, the Collection is still owned by the AFI | AACTA, though it is presently housed at RMIT University, where it operates under the auspices of the School of Media and Communication.
The Collection includes materials encompassing cinema and television from the world over (with particular strengths in screen theory and history and in Australian cinema and television). The Collection features a diverse range of newspaper clippings files, books, journals, film and television scripts, directories, reports, film promotional material, and film festival catalogues. The Collection is used by filmmakers, academics, students, journalists and film buffs of all kinds.
The AFI Research Collection is a non lending Collection (although some items may be loaned out via Libraries Australia Document Delivery service). Photocopying facilities are available, as is a microfilm scanner. On request the Collection can allow clients to use viewing and listening facilities for the small collection of videos, DVDs, and music.
The AFI Research Collection staff are always happy to assist clients with their research needs and have vast experience in searching film, TV and media databases and archives.
The AFI Research Collection also gratefully accepts donations of materials relating to film and television which are deemed to be of value to the Collection. In the past, donations from AFI members, the Australian film industry and the general public have greatly assisted in ensuring the continued relevance of the Collection. Volunteers for the library are also sought.
The AFI Research Collection is located in the centre of Melbourne at RMIT University's City Campus, Building 8, Level 6, Room 23. Entry is via Russell Street, between LaTrobe Street and the Old Melbourne Gaol. Map here.
