Michael Gracey is an acclaimed feature, commercial, music video and VFX director who grew up in Melbourne shooting and developing films from an early age. The visual wunderkind was then plucked from school to become the youngest ever animator at Animal Logic.
His first music video won an ARIA Award and led to collaborations with the Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, Elton John and Pink. He is also a celebrated commercials director, whose advertising work has received three Lions at the Cannes Advertising Festival and two Clio Awards, including a Gold for Best Direction.
Gracey is best known for his feature film debut THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. The film went on to gross over $585m worldwide and quickly became the third highest-grossing live-action musical of all time. It also received three Golden Globe nominations, winning the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and was nominated for an Oscar.
In a one-off event exclusive to AACTA members, Gracey will take the audience on a visual journey through the making of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN – deconstructing the film on screen with an array of visual material – much of it largly unseen. Known for its stunning visuals, incredible musical numbers and passionate performances by Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zak Efron and Zendaya, this is an essential masterclass for all admirers of Gracey’s work, all fans of the movie, and for anyone who wants to learn from one of the world’s greatest talents.
